The Grand Staircase, Escalante National Monument is huge at over one million acres. Its size was reduced by over 800,000 acres in 2017 to allow for commercial drilling, mining, etc. This was the last area of the "lower 48" contiguous states to be mapped. When it was, all kinds of wonders were discovered and, later, President Clinton established it as a National Monument. National Parks are established by Congress and Monuments are established by Presidential orders.
The Grand Staircase part of the name refers to the layers denoting the geographic development of the area. In places, each of the layers are visible. Much of Escalante seems barren but as you traverse it you experience a visual treat of hoodoos, arches, and strange rock shapes that are fascinating.
