Some look at her and see an angel. Others see a woman beckoning over her shoulder, “Come to me.” For some, the image feels spiritual, for others sensual and almost seductive. Whatever you see in the image, the Spirit Woman is clear to see. The image was not done by computer magic; it is what the camera captured.
The Navajo consider the slot canyons to be spiritual and even magical places. Some say spirits frequent the canyons. It is easy to agree with either view once you visit. The canyons are breath-taking. Light beams coming into the canyon are only visable for about 15 minutes a day from April to October. Much as with light coming in a window you typically cannot see the beam. Light needs something to refract off of to be visable. So the Navajo guides toss sand into the air creating refraction and the beam appears. For this shot two guides threw sand at once and I was sure the image would be ruined. But in this 1/6 second exposure the sand slowly “painted” this image in the air as it came down. Or did it merely reveal what was already there? You decide.
